Wai-O-Tapu > Taupō

53km

~3h30

October 3, 2012

That’s the worst windy day I’ve ever experienced! I cycled the last 20km facing this wind. I was riding at 7 to 13km per hour, so slow. Fortunately, I’ve reached Taupō, the center of the north island 🙂

Between Rotorua and Taupō there are huge exploitations of pine trees monocultures, consider bad for the environment as they push away creatures living in their original area. I don’t know how many logging truck I’ve seen on the road until now but it’s something like 1 each 5 minutes.

Hey, that’s still the same geothermal station 🙂

Reaching Taupō

Finally in Taupō!

I can see the lake 🙂 let’s have a look and a break.

To the left…

To the right…

In the front. I’m going to stay few days to visit the place. Hence, there is a free camp close to the center 🙂 and a McDonald’s for internet! Good place 🙂

It’s pretty windy here. I’m trying to write my diary and keep an eye on the lake but I’d better find a place inside. McDonald’s?

Finally, I finished writing in McDonald’s. I also thought about staying in a backpacker’s in the city center rather than at the free campsite outside of the city. OK, $17 or free? OK, the campsite 🙂

On the way to the camp

I’m about halfway from the camp but I came across that lookout point. It might be a bit too dark but I can try to capture the scenery anyway.

This afternoon I was thinking that the lamp I bought for my bike was not really necessary but I was wrong. Now it’s actually essential!

After one little hill I see already the panel for the camp. In fact the camp is not so far from the center. As usual, I thought I will be alone but there are like 30 people here! Cars everywhere, even tents, yes! tents! I’m really surprised. For the first time I’m struggling to find a spot haha 🙂 Also, this place is full of French people for some reasons. I’ve heard already two in the McDonald’s and now I’m surrounded. It seems that French people don’t like paying for camping 🙂 See ya!
