Today, I take one day to visit Gisborne. The weather is nice and warm. It is a good occasion for a tour… by bike of course, always 🙂
Tonight we will have a party on the beach with everyone. Guy Fawkes Night (Wiki) is an old English event celebrated each year on the evening of November 5th with bonfires, fireworks and family gatherings.
I start by the beach. The information centre was just near by. I didn’t expected that beach to be that close. That’s great! Next step is the top of that hill 🙂
In 1769 James Cook (Wiki) navigated along this coast identifying the New Zealand’s map. The British man arrived here with his boat to stock up on food. But he accounted a little problem with the Maoris, certainly because he was thinking: “I’m the boss”. The captain’s crew killed a local Māori man called Te Maro but before they had to retreat. Cook continued his trip without the food he was expecting to get so he called this place “Bay of Poverty (Wiki)”. The Māori wanted to rename the site Tauranga Nui a Kiwa on the honor of Kiwa, a Polynesian ancestor who discovered the island a long time ago but “Bay of Poverty” stayed… That’s not cool mister Cook!
Shopping
After spending something like 2 hours in all electronic shops of Gisborne I’m finally going up to the top of that hill we saw earlier. Indeed, I have another problem with my phone. It’s not working anymore. The battery is empty and I need a special cable to recharge it from my bike. Fortunately, I found that cable! I was pretty sure it was impossible to get one but a guy at a Vodafone shop gave me an old one he has in a secret place Behind his counter. I’m really SO lucky 🙂 So, mmh, OK where was I?… Ah yes, the hill 🙂
Climbing
That’s it :-). The top of the top! I took the first picture earlier from that beach over there.
The bay and the container boat. The logging trucks are busy dropping the wood for the boat to transport it further somewhere.
Yes, that’s the boat I’m talking about in case you didn’t see it haha 🙂
Gisborne city center. The first day when I arrived, I ate along the Tūranganui river, a little beyond those two bridges, under to the bunch of trees.
🙂
I thought this guy represented James Cook but the sign says that they don’t know who is he.
That’s wonderful!
Downhill
Back to the city.
Very beautiful house.
I’ve learned a new word today: Roaming. It could be the perfect sport to balance my muscle work haha 🙂
I really like that fact that houses here are not surrounded by walls. Those natural fences add so much more greenery to the atmosphere.
That cute park is facing the river (on the right hand side). The Roaming teacher is waiting for his students. It’s really peaceful here.
Guy Fawkes Night starts!
We have reached the beach with Jane, Chris, Tariq, Manuka, Brownie and Jane’s friends 🙂 The fire is already burning and we have so much wood for all the night, cool!
The sky is wonderful!
Next to us, children are making a big fire as well. Maybe, that branch is too much isn’t it?
Our fire is quiet now but still really warm! So good 🙂
Can you feel the warmth?
Colors!
Tariq with his cup of tea 🙂
Chris and Tariq thoughtful front the fire.
The guy with the stick is Norman 🙂
Çagda, once you will be a master the things you have bought, the next step is fire!
There is many active fires now around us 🙂
On the over side as well!
Our fire is best because Norman is taking care about it ;-).
It’s time for fireworks! Gisborne city has no plan for fireworks so everyone can participate.
Video!
place to the show!
The double ‘n’.
The “ooOoOoo” and “OoOO”
“We want to do the same! Give me one, give me one! :-)”.
Jane’s artistic performance. Few minutes ago her clothes got on fire but she laid down on the ground instantly. Good reflexes!
The final!
Everybody is focused onto the fire 🙂
It’s time to head back home now. Children have school tomorrow and adults a job. I’m the only one on holiday here. Tomorrow I’m going to continue my trip towards the south.
Tariq offered to Chris and me to come back by walk. That’s a good idea hence, a double good idea because the car is full anyway :-). The thing is Chris doesn’t wear any shoes so we will be two. I had a good walk and conversation with Tariq. Chris and Tariq are the perfect example proving to everyone that hate is created by governments and greed. Chris is from California, Tariq from Afghanistan and there are very good friends. That’s interesting.
Good night!
Hello Damdam !
I searched about the statue who put his hand in his jacket and who has a strange hat on his head but I found nothing. Bah! If that’s not him, that is his brother !!
I don’t understand how they juggle with fire without burning themself!
The color of ocean is really beautiful, it looks like the Verdon! lol
I took the picture of the panel to remember the story of the statue guy who anybody knows put my picture was blur…
They don’t burn themselves because they don’t touch the fire. Jane used “Bolas” it’s a chain with a ball on fire at the end and the over guy handle some sticks. The sane we put on cocktails or we use for birthday party. It’s it more clear now ? 🙂
Hey Damien! Wacthing your Gisborne adventure with Jane and the Family, the Guy Fawkes celebration ! You have a good fun! 🙂 Nice photos, video and Jane photo dancing with the fire! Awesome!
