Kerikeri, first day of work :-)

Manual
work

July 14, 2012

Finally, work starts way sonner than expected. This morning, while I was still dreaming in my warm sleeping bag the manager of the campsite comes “knocking my door”. It is 7:54am. “Hello, we’ve got work for you. Get ready in 10 minutes, is that ok?” Me: “Yes, coming!”. Normally I need like 9 minutes to extract myself from that bloody sleeping bag haha. And the thing spins during the night so I’ve got the hoody right in front of face and tighten to the max. I did not even have the time to unzip the tent and say “thank you” lol. Ok, let’s get ready as quick as possible.

10 minutes later...

Note: the picture above does not represent what we did that day but I wanted to have one so I took it from the next post.

Ok, ready! I jump in the van, still half a sleep, biting a crunchy carrot. I have no idea where we are heading, what type of work I’m gonna do and when I will be back to camp but let’s see 🙂 There is another backpacker with me that could give me some informations but he doesn’t speak a word of english, cool!

Another 10 minutes later and we arrive at, what is apparently our destination. Plenty of crop trees surround us but they don’t have any fruits so it is not today that we are going to pick anything. The van leaves and we walk where we supposed we should. Maybe the owner is around, somewhere.Ok, no… no one is here, great. “Fuck!” says the other guy. Oh, I see, he speak at least a word of english 🙂

We keep walking around expecting to see the next person who will welcome us and give us the instructions for our first job but so far, still no one around. Curious…

Finally, another 10 minutes later, a new guy comes and walk towards us. He seems to be the boss here. He explains what we are supposed to do. Some trees were pruned and we have to collect all the branches on from the ground, throw them in a trailer and bring that trailer “over there” where the branches will be pilled up. Once this is done, boss will show us another area. In total, we filled about 6 or 7 trailer, few! even the owner join us all along. She is not a joke that’s for sure and super friendly too.

All the crop trees that the owner have are kiwi fruits trees. Unfortunately, there were all “naked” after the owner pruned them all. I wish I’d seen those trees before.

Finally we finished the day with another job, this time way harder than the first one. We had to extract tree stumps. The thing is, those trees were cut recently, the roots are still fresh so that’s a nightmare to pull each root away. Really tough job that we will keep doing tomorrow.

At 5pm, the job is done. Direction > shower 🙂 Tomorrow I will only work during morning. Nice, I will be able to go to the super market during the afternoon 🙂

See ya!

    Gros bisous mon Damdam.
    A bientôt via ce blog.
