Youhou! I did my first free camping night under the rain, the strikes and thunder :-). I didn’t sleep so well but I did it!

Today for the first time I will travel under the rain. It’s the right moment to test all my waterproof gear. Even the horses have waterproof suit 🙂

The elevation today is fairly flat. I got through some hills sometimes but it’s not difficult. I’ll be fast today because I have only 40km riding to reach the next campsite.

I like this kind of street sign. My first goal, cap Reinga, is getting closer!

Ninety Mile beach camp is roughly 10km away now.

On the way to the camp

The main goal of the day is achieved. It’s 11.40am and I already arrived to Ninety Mile beach. The little issue I have is that the campsite will open in one hour. Let’s have a tour then.

It’s a beautiful place. Hence, we can see the ocean from here. I wish it will be possible to pitch my tent onto that grass but I’m afraid only camping car are allowed.

That’s the cabins area.

Another very crowded place. I might be the only customer here.

So, I have one hour left and nothing special to do. Ah yes! Eating! A good fresh snapper 🙂

Lunch time

Soon the reception will open but I still have some time to kill. Let’s have a look to that famous Ninety Mile beach. Tomorrow, I’m going to ride on it to reach my next checkpoint :-). In fact, we are totally allowed to ride or drive here. Some company organize tours for tourists. The sand is very hard and flat so it should be an easy way to get deep in the far north. I could take the road but the man I met yesterday told me that it’s a boring, hilly and narrow road. And it is not very safe for a touring cyclists. I’ll give it a try then.

Setting up the tent before leaving again

It is still early in the afternoon so I decided to go to Kaitaia to buy some food for the next few days.

20km to go and 20km to go back. Finally I’ve rode more than expected.

The supporters are always there 🙂

If you wait few minutes that’s the result you get haha! The whole family is watching!

At the supermarket

On the way back to Ninety Mile Beach Camp I cannot resist to take photos of those fancy letter boxes.

The last one of the day 🙂
See you tomorrow!
